Clothing & Essentials Program

Meeting Basic Needs with Dignity

At The Broad Center, we believe that access to basic necessities is a human right—not a privilege. Our Clothing & Essentials Program provides both new and gently used items to individuals and families navigating poverty, housing instability, or difficult life transitions. This program ensures that everyone—regardless of circumstance—has what they need to feel clean, warm, and prepared for daily life.

Whether it’s a new winter coat, interview clothing for a job opportunity, or everyday wear for a growing child, we are committed to helping people show up to life with comfort and confidence.

Program’s Impact

Across New York City, thousands of residents struggle to access everyday essentials—not due to lack of effort, but due to rising living costs, systemic barriers, and the burden of caregiving. From individuals unable to work because of a disability to parents staying home with children, many simply don’t have the resources to purchase basic necessities.

Individuals experiencing homelessness face an even steeper challenge. Too often overlooked or dismissed, many go without clean clothes, socks, coats, or hygiene items for days at a time. But just because they are unseen by society does not mean their needs are any less urgent—or their dignity any less important. At The Broad Center, we serve every person with compassion, because we believe that no one is invisible, and everyone is worthy of care.

In fact, a 2022 report found that 35% of low-income households in New York City experienced difficulty affording basic items such as clothing, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies (Robin Hood Foundation, 2022). These material hardships are especially pronounced among Black and Latino communities, many of whom are disproportionately impacted by income inequality and underemployment.

That’s why our program doesn’t just fill gaps—it restores dignity and empowers individuals to focus on what matters most: health, stability, and moving forward.
